The other day we shot at an amazing location. It was an old china factory in Hackney, London, which is now being lived in.

The location has been used by Italian Vogue and GQ.

The shoot theme was based on movement and the styling had a toyboyish edge.

It was a great day, the model was lovely and great to work with.

Interview with Philip Treacy

Our interview with Phillip Treacy took place in his studio in Battersea, South London. First we were seated in the boardroom, which elegantly displayed an array of his stunning creations, before then being shown to his office/studio space. One of the walls was covered from top to bottom in wooden hatblock moulds, which were lit up by natural sunlight beaming through the glass roof.
Treacy took his seat in his swing chair which was hung in the middle of the room. I noticed the thimble on his middle finger, which he has said to only feel dressed in the morning when he is wearing it.

Meeting such a well respected Milliner was an experience in itself, let alone hearing all the gripping information he shared with us.
We discussed topics ranging from his efforts to glamorise women, his fondness of Lady Ga Ga, his experience of getting to know Karl Lagerfeld, all the way to his appreciation for great photography.

On Firday I ventured into the depths and bredths of London for a jam-packed day full of interviews...first on the agenda was the one and only Barbara Hulanicki. It was an amazing experience meeting such an icon, and was so refreshing to meet someone that is so easy-going, fun to chat with and just an all round top lady! Her laughter was infectious as we chatted for over an hour at her friend's London home, and felt sad that it had to end! She has to be one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met and am throughly looking forward to seeing what she will come up with next... having designed fashion, founded Biba with her late husband Fitz, turned a hand to interior decorating, collaberated with Italian handbag brand Coccinelle... I wonder what will be on the cards next!?

After leaving Barbara, we made our way to visit the breakthrough footwear designer Chau Har Lee at her studio near Shoreditch. She was once again, so lovely and helpful and you could tell she has such passion for what she does... which is great to see in someone who is obviously very intellectual as well, given that she trained herself to use complex computer programs to create 3D models of her collection of mixed material footwear.

Finally, we made it to Ben Westwood's place... unfortunately we got so lost around Battersea that we were quite a bit late, and not being from London doesnt help either! After profuse apologies when we arrived, we chatted away for over an hour about how he likes to escape to the countryside - the unpredictable landscape, it offers something completely different from the 'shithole' he calls London (and i'm sure many would agree!), though despite the bad points of the big smoke he does have an incredible view from his 12th floor flat... spanning almost all of the London skyline. We identified Big Ben, Crystal Palace, the London Eye, and many other key points. We also touched on subjects like the misconception everyone has had about him launching a clothing line, and how everyone expects him to just design fashion because his mother, Vivienne does. Soon it was time to go, and he offered both myself and Pippa to take one of his homemade 'porn badges' as a souvenir... deciding to choose the least raunchy I could see, I opted for a cheeky Bettie Page number, whereas Pippa got given two with a models legs spread in knee high pvc boots and leopard panties. All in all, quite an interesting and eventful day! Also learning that I would be adding the legendary Phillip Treacy and Jackie Dixon to my list of interviews for next week, came as rather a fantastic surprise when I got home... now to draft up more questions for next week and transcribe these 3 interviews!

Interview with Nina Chakrabarti

Meeting the illustrator, Nina Chakrabarti was a really refreshing experience. Her attitude to work could be perceived as old fashioned as she aspires to cater to herself first and foremost and does not concern herself with marketing schemes or how her work is perceived. In an interview conducted in her studio in south London, the artist discussed her move from Calcutta to London, her time spent at Central St. Martins and the Royal College of Art and her plans for the future.

“I remember Boy George getting to number 1 and thinking ‘Wow! he’s from out of space!”

Help Support Mark Heyes Haiti Campaign

In late January, a catastrophic earthquake devastated Haiti. Nearly a month later, they are still struggling to re-build their lives.
To help support such a destructive disaster, GMTV’s fashion presenter, Mark Heyes, is carrying out a campaign entitled ‘Recycled Fashion for Haiti’ which aims to get the British public to recycle their unused clothes for charity.
Celebrities are also getting involved in the campaign, such as Sienna Miller (Gucci bag), Jonny Wilkinson (boots) Scarlet Johansson (Prada bag), Vivienne Westwood, Paloma Faith, Estelle, Leighton Meester, Fearne Cotton and lots more, all of which are donating items to be auctioned online at eBay.com with all proceeds going to the DEC Haiti charity.

Mark is also hoping that women across the country will auction unwanted fashion items and donate to the Recycle Fashion appeal. According to recent survey 57% of women admitted they bought items of clothing they have never worn which would amount to around £2 billion wasted at the January sales this year alone.

Interview with Jason DeCaires Taylor

Today I had been eagerly awaiting my interview with internationally acclaimed underwater sculptor ‘extraordinaire’ Jason DeCaires Taylor. Originally from the UK, Jason now resides in Mexico where he works on and displays his many sculptural projects.

Many questions flash through my mind as I prepare for the interview, does he think of his underwater world as a form of escapism? How on earth does he make casts of real-life people? …and how do they feel about being immortalised in underwater artwork?

So, what can you look forward to…

“I was actually a graffiti artist when I was young, I used to do a lot of trains and walls…”

“Some people are amazed by my underwater sculptures, it confuses them… some people have even asked if it’s a lost empire.”

“All the pieces I have created recently have been made using life casts of real people, we’ve had local fishermen, schoolchildren and even a nun. I love communicating how peoples characteristics have evolved according to where they live.”

“The weightlessness of the underwater experience makes you feel removed from the ‘normal’ world, a sort of escapism.”

I had the first meeting with the printers , the other day. It went well, but was as expected, quite broad.
As a team we are far from deciding a finalised design plan of the publication, as we understand the importance of the overall look. Due to reaching a new readership this year, and developing our content, it is essential to portray this through its appearance.
We want to make the publication hard back this year, to emphasis its ‘book like,’ ever lasting content. We have also been considering the idea of having paper pages within the middle of the publication, among the usual matt pages. This will give texture to the pages and hopefully give 3rd Floor the individuality it deserves.
This is an area of which we need a lot more planning, but we feel we are on the right tracks, and at least we are all in agreement.

The 'not so secret' Diary of a London Fashion Week Intern - Part 1.

London Fashion Week, the notoriously busy time on every fashion elite and design enthusiast’s calendar. You can walk just about anywhere around Covent Garden and be bombarded with promo guys and girls ushering bottles of water, leaflets and goody bags into your hands, hoping to attract buyers and press to the shows that await.

Caught up in the spirit of Fashion Week, I decided to bulk up my C.V a bit by interning for Vauxhall Fashion Scout whilst getting an insiders view of the preparation involved in producing a show.

Arriving into London on the Thursday morning, everything seemed surprisingly calm… perhaps this is due to not having my caffeine fix for the day yet, it was only 8.30am!

I promptly made my way to my hotel, leaving my suitcase before running back to the tube to head to Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden to start my first day of the internship. Little did I know, the first problem was just around the corner, how to actually get into the building?

I saw a small collective of people who appeared to be waiting just around the corner of the building, so headed over in the hope they would be interning as well and were just as lost as I was.

Luckily, my judgement was right and we were swiftly met by a representative from Fashion Scout who led us inside the grand building.

The floors were tiled in a mosaic fashion, with marble staircases sloping in all directions. It truly looked like a scene from a movie, so luxurious and an utterly gorgeous venue to hold a fashion show.

Making my way down the corridor, I spotted a huge line of other interns waiting outside a grand hall with massive wooden doors – this is where we were to receive our briefing for the week, and were split into teams of Front of House and Backstage interns.

I was extremely relieved to be allocated to the Front of House, as many horror stories of rude stylists and designers has tainted my view of becoming a dresser for the models. As the week progressed though, I learnt that this was not the case for every show… I guess there are just a few bad apples?

The first day was basically a short tour of the building, followed by moving stacks of boxes to different locations around the building and preparing the catwalk and goody bags for the busy Friday ahead.

Friday 19th February 2010

Got to Fashion scout at 12.00, late for fashion week I thought, but I’m not complaining!

I was then assigned to direct visitors around the maze of a building, before organising the foyer and catwalk area for the approaching David Koma show.

Rumours were that Hilary Alexander was to be in attendance, so when I saw her take her place on the front row in her blood red kimono tunic I was elated. Susie Lau from Style Bubble was also present.

The show was incredible! We only just packed everyone into the hall, and with everyone scrambling to get a peek at the high profile collection I was quite glad I could just stand back and watch from the sidelines.

Zigzag designs were prominent features of the collection, which fused rather well with quite neutral tones of fawns and blacks. Also Koma’s use of what appeared to be zip teeth as detailing on cocktail dresses was pure genius. If I could afford them, I would be snapping up one of these dresses within minutes, but sadly a student loan doesn’t tend to stretch that far.

The final highlight for the day has to be the Ones to Watch show, featuring 4 up-and-coming designers: Eudon Choi, David Longshawe, ASKH, and Florencia Kozuch.

The majority of the buzz centered around Kozuch’s collection of loop knit sweaters teamed with wide brimmed parson’s hats, with people raving about the collection for much of the week!

London Fashion Week - Day 2 - 20/02/10

The sun was shining, the public were dressed to impress and the paparazzi were leering… just another day at LFW.

Our day started with the LFW exhibition. Many ranges were displayed, from accessories to NEWGEN, to Estethica, with every stand being completely unique.
Most of the Jewellery was themed, and the tarnished texture seemed to be the most popular. The ranges of clothing displayed a variety of fabric textures and shapes. The ‘worn look’ seemed to be repeated among the brands.

After exploring the exhibition, Lizzie and I headed to the Bell Sauvage show. Not quite knowing what to expect, we took our seats in anticipation.
Virginia Ferreira and Christian Neuman are the designers behind the contemporary womanswear label, and are known for their striking digital prints and imaginative silhouettes.

The collection demonstrated elongated post-human silhouettes which highlight bold graphic prints, all of which, H.R Giger is the inspiration.

Then onto the highlight of the day, the star studded PPQ show. After mingling and taking in the atmosphere, we were taken to our seats to view what was dramatic display of ‘Fantasia’.
The collection bought together by Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker, consisted of boned bodies, volume, and body conscious shapes. Opulent velvet, moray taffetas and silken crepe were all used to define the theme.
With a front row of celebs such as Peaches Geldof, Pixie Lott, Marina of Marina and the Diamonds, the Saturdays, George Lamb and the Skins cast, PPQ’s collection yet again, has given us exciting things to look forward to.

I was really lucky to attend London fashion week as the stylist for 3rd Floor Publication. I had a fantastic day and met so many wonderful people. I would love to thank all the members of the British Fashion Council who were so welcoming.

Paul Costelloe's A/W 2010 show was the first to touch down on the London runway this morning, with a collection dominated by dark and Gothic imagery, and a touch of super-heroine chic. Costelloe has presented the opening show for the past five seasons, with collections that often set the tone for the week's eventsIt was beyond amazing!! The collection was infused with the 19th century period dark western overtones with a contemporary twist. The collection had elements of nostalgic futuristic fashion. The Paul Costelloe A/W 2010 collection saw Long, lean and mean cigarette trousers teamed with structure- heavy jackets are reminiscent of envisioned future fashion, typified by metallic tones with leather detailing and architectural elegance.

Making Progress

Most projects always start off slowly, and our case was no exception. However, things are really starting to pick up the pace now. We are cracking on with planning shoots, researching articles and setting up interviews. Things are really looking positive.
We meet regularly as a team, and have acknowledged the best way to communicate our ideas are with the use of presentations, brainstorms, mood boards and displaying cut outs of inspiration.

Whilst carrying out some market research I was overjoyed to come across magMA.
Since the closing down of Borders stores, I’ve been in a dilemma of where to get my dose of high-end fashion magazines…. But now, thanks to magMA, my troubles are over.
magMA (8 Earlham Street, Covent Garden) offers an array of creative books and magazines, including all the best high-end fashion publications, from NYLON to Twin to Paradis.
